“Through our scientific and technological genius, we have made of this world a neighborhood and yet we have not had the ethical commitment to make of it a brotherhood. But somehow, and in some way, we have got to do this. We must all learn to live together as brothers or we will all perish together as fools. We are tied together in the single garment of destiny, caught in an inescapable network of mutuality.” - Martin Luther King

H1N1 Update...
Letter available in Spanish here.
Dear Parkside Middle School Parents:
We are experiencing a significant number of students with symptoms of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) at Parkside Middle School and of steps taken to address this issue. In accordance with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidance, the Prince William Health District (PWHD) has informed us that not all students with ILI symptoms will be tested for the H1N1 virus. Therefore, it is impossible to know if these cases are caused by the H1N1 virus. However, since we know the virus is circulating in the community, and due to the number of students who are ill, we are informing you as part of our ongoing efforts to keep parents fully informed of important school-related news.
Our School Division has been in frequent contact with local and state health officials in accordance with established PWCS guidelines. We are closely monitoring this situation and are following the guidance of the Virginia Department of Education, PWHD, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), and the CDC. All appropriate measures are being taken to ensure the health of all of our students and staff, including the use of approved disinfectant detergents that kill viruses such as H1N1. As we receive important information from the PWHD regarding our schools, it will be posted to our School Division Web site (www.pwcs.edu).
While the spread of the virus from person-to-person continues throughout the United States, at this point, the severity of the virus does not appear to be any more severe than seasonal flu. Please continue to send your well child to school. The latest guidance from the CDC does not recommend closing a school unless there are extenuating circumstances. School Division officials will work closely with local and state health officials to monitor the situation and determine if our response should change.
Please also continue to monitor your children for any of the symptoms of influenza, which include: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue, and occasionally vomiting and diarrhea. If your child is experiencing flu symptoms, particularly fever, please keep him or her at home and contact your family’s healthcare provider.
This is also a good opportunity to remind everyone of a few simple steps you can take to keep your family healthy. These include:
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Clean hands with an alcohol-based hand cleaner if soap and water are not available.
Cover your nose and mouth with your sleeve or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Stay home when you are sick, until you are fever-free for 24 hours – without the use of fever-reducing medication.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth to prevent the spread of germs.
Avoid close contact with those who have symptoms of flu.
Seek care for you or your child; please call ahead to your health care provider's office and tell them what symptoms you have, so they can see you quickly and prevent exposing other people in the waiting room.
The health and safety of our students and staff is always of the utmost importance. Please refer to the PWCS Web site at www.pwcs.edu or the VDH Web site at www.vdh.virginia.gov for more information and helpful resources regarding the H1N1 virus.
Sincerely,
Alan Ross,
Acting Principal
Parkside Middle School
Principal
Updated messages regarding the H1N1 virus are being posted to the PWCS Web site on a regular basis. An email was sent to staff last week announcing the cancellation or postponement of vaccination clinics due to producation delays with the vaccine. The situation remains fluid so please check the 2009 H1N1 Virus Updates page on the PWCS Web site daily, or the Prince William Health District Web site (specifically re: vaccine information), for the most recent information available and links to other important resources.

Champion's Water.org fundraiser
The 6th grade Champions team has started to raise funds for people in developing countries that don't have access to clean water or proper sanitation. Please check out our web page and see if you can get your students, family and friends involved also! This is a worthwhile cause and something that we can help change if we work together!
Thanks!

ParksideMiddle School is Fueled Up to Play 60!
The hallways have a new, exciting look! Banners, display cubes and poster clings are front and center to encourage our students to eat healthy and be active. The excitement is all part of Fuel Up to Play 60, a comprehensive wellness program brought to our school free of charge by the National Dairy Council®, our local Dairy Council® and the National Football League (NFL).
Fuel Up to Play 60 is designed to inspire students in grades 4-10 to “get up and play” for 60 minutes every day and to eat more of the foods kids don’t get enough of – low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Wellness is important at our school, and we know we can influence the eating and physical activity habits of our students for the better. Fuel Up to Play 60 is designed to help us. Parents and volunteers are welcome to be part of the action and encouraged to model healthy eating and physical activity behaviors.
To enroll yourself for the Fuel Up to Play 60 eNewsletters, go to www.FuelUpToPlay60.com and enter your email address in the “School Sign Up” area. To help or learn more, please contact Mrs. Carol Pierce, Physical Education Department Chair.

Edulink / School Fusion Announcement
This year a new process has been implemented to centralize the PWCS schools’ online system allowing parents to have one user account for their school Web site log in and the Edulink Intouch log in. To obtain your user account follow the steps below:
- All parents must obtain an authorization letter in person at your child’s school in order to log in to your school’s Web site or to log in to Edulink Intouch.
- This year, there is a new process to log into Edulink Intouch to view student grades or emergency information. Follow the steps below:
- After we notify parents that the materials are ready, go to your child’s school to receive a printed authorization letter which will have a student “passcode” that you will need when you register on your school’s Web site. Bring a photo ID. If you have children in more than one school, please go to each school in person.
- After receiving the letter, go to one of your children’s school Web sites and register by clicking on the left button “New User Registration.” You only have to register once at one school Web site, even if you have children at more than one school.
- Parents who are also PWCS school staff members do not have to register as a “New User” on SchoolFusion. They will simply log on to their school Web site as usual, click on “My Family” and add the student passcodes on that menu.
- Fill out the online registration form and enter your student’s ID number and “passcode” for each of your children in PWCS schools. If you have children in more than one school, you can enter all children’s passcodes from one Web site. Also, you can add more children at a later time by clicking on your “My family” icon after logging into a school Web site.
- You can use the same log in user name and password for all Web sites where your children attend school.
- You can use the same school Web site log in and password to log into Edulink Intouch as well.
After you have registered as a “New User” on the Web site, you will be able to log in to Edulink Intouch (also a button on the left of your school’s Web site) and view your student’s information. However please wait 48 hours before logging into Edulink Intouch since there is a time delay to transfer login information to the Intouch system.
Your Edulink Intouch login user name and password will be the same as your school Web site log in.
